DESIGN SAN FRANCISCO 2015 – PREMIER ANNUAL EVENT

Three days to explore, engage and enjoy . . .

The San Francisco Design Center invites you to Design San Francisco 2015, the premier annual event for design professionals. Our goal is to inspire you with all manner of creative possibilities, provocative ideas, and valuable intelligence on what’s happening locally and globally.

We welcome back our biennial Designers of Distinction awards program where SFDC showrooms nominate Bay Area designers in six distinctive categories.

We end Design San Francisco with our fourth annual Haute | Dog SF 4, a doggie runway fashion show – where designers create couture ensembles for their dogs utilizing fabrics from the SFDC showrooms — and benefitting Muttville Senior Dog Rescue. DESIGNERS' WEDNESDAY

Delicious Illumination – 0.1 CEU
Tasty ways to add LEDs into Homes & Gardens
Bausman & Company, Galleria #300
Lunch will be served.
(0.1 CEU) Randall Whitehead, a regular guest expert on HDTV and Martha Stuart Living Radio, will act as your guide to the best of the emerging alternative light sources, while taking you on a roller coaster ride of good and bad lighting.
As newer versions of LEDs are coming onto the market, learning what to look for on the label can go a long way in making more informed decisions about the products that you select. Some of the terminologies will be familiar, but some may be new to you.
One of the most important terms to become familiar with is Color Temperature. All light sources emit a color measured in degrees of Kelvin. This is a major factor in how we perceive illumination and also how the colors of objects within a space are affected.
CRI (Color Rendering Index) is also a key ingredient. This indicates how close the color rendering qualities are to that of incandescent. Incandescent light has a CRI rating of 100. The best LED products are those that come as close to 100 as possible. TM30 is looming on the horizon. It adds a whole new level of precise color measuring, but can it be adequately explained to the end user? Is TM30 really TMI30?
Lumen Output is another term with which you need to get comfortable. It measures the amount of light a given product emits.
Getting familiar with just a few key terms can open up a whole new level of understanding about how to select lighting products effectively.
Whether you are using LED sources or not, the basic premise of good lighting design, called light layering, remains the same. This is when different functions of light- task, accent, ambient and decorative are used in combination to create a cohesive and flexible illuminated environment. This technique has not changed with the introduction of alternative light sources, but what we choose can make or break the success of the lighting design.
This presentation will show you how to incorporate energy efficient sources into a comprehensive and inviting design, giving a look that feels like incandescent. The quality of illumination remains with the added benefit of reduced wattage and fixtures that can last a very, very long time. Lunch will be served.

Eyesight: Help or Hindrance? What We Can Learn About Design from the Blind

Ours is a visual world and becoming more so by the hour. But sometimes we use it so much that our four remaining senses—smell, touch, taste, and hearing–become neglected, lazy, and out-of-practice. Spend an interactive hour learning all about the “neglected “senses and how they influence sensory design—and the work of the interior designer. The presentation will focus on how we can enhance the design of interior spaces, products, experiences, etc. to ensure that all of our senses are adequately satisfied and working harmoniously to optimize the user experience.  For interior designers, this means incorporating overlooked design principles that deliver better, more relatable design, and a more productive, engaged, and empathetic client partnership.

WALL COUTURE: A CONVERSATION WITH FROMENTAL CO-FOUNDER LIZZIE DESHAYES
MODERATED BY MARY JO BOWLING

Nearly 15 years ago, Tim Butcher and Lizzie Deshayes started Fromental with the stated goal of making the world’s most beautiful fabrics for wallpapers, drapery, and upholstery. Today, in conversation with Mary Jo Bowling of Luxe Interiors + Design, Deshayes tells us how they achieved their objective by marrying luxurious goods with the fi nest craftsmanship techniques, creating what could be called “wall couture.” Fromental offers bespoke fabrics that are painstakingly crafted—with artists spending up to 600 hours embellishing individual panels. Fromental styles ranging from traditional 18th century Chinoiserie patterns to pared down, minimalist designs can be seen in high-end properties around the globe. Deshayes will speak about a commitment to quality, what’s next in the world of luxury fabrics, and bringing fashion principles to interiors.
